Whether you decide to simply finish off your walls with a coat of paint or include a feature wall using patterned paper, it’s important to consider what you’ll do carefully as your walls are the background to your kitchen and how you decorate them will have a big effect on the overall ambience of the space.
Creating a mood board or a Pinterest page is always a great way to start if you’re unsure. Your kitchen cabinetry, worktops and splashback choices will, of course, influence your scheme, too but don’t be afraid to be a bit adventurous, particularly in bigger rooms where you can afford to play with pattern and shade.
COLOUR CHOICES
So, which colour of the year 2018 are you feeling the most? The vibrant Ultra Violet from Pantone or the more restrained ‘Heart Wood’ from Dulux? While ‘Ultra Violet’ might work well as a feature wall in a large kitchen diner, its boldness of shade isn’t for everyone. According to Feng Shui, the Year of the Dog’s luckiest colours are earthy tones of brown, yellow and beige plus blues and greens to signify earth and sky. As global style continues to grow there are plenty of warming yellows and shades of stone to compliment the look. While much deeper shades of blue and green abound elsewhere in the home, it seems that paler shades of grey along with soft blush pink, such as Farrow & Ball’s ‘Setting Plaster’, are clearly going to be around for quite some time. However, if you do want to go dark, then navy is a great partner to pure white (try ‘Royal Navy’ from Little Greene Paint Company).
FEATURE WALLS
While wallpapers used to be a real no-no in a small kitchen because of the moisture, the advent of more efficient extraction and larger spaces means there’s more choice. Of course, you don’t want to have wallpaper close to cooking areas, but the latest geometric patterns from companies such as Graham & Brown (check out Prism, £40 per roll which comes in a variety of shades with metallic accents) or faux papers that mimic industrial materials such as concrete or stone (try Bare Concrete Mural wallpaper £36 per sq m from muralswallpaper.co.uk) look amazing in a modern kitchen design such as Linear. Traditional florals have fallen by the wayside a little, now it’s all about the tropical botanicals with lush greenery and palm leaves galore (try Yasuni from the Zapara Wallpaper Collection by Harlequin, £52 per roll).
While adding colour to your kitchen may sit at the top of your design agenda, walls may not be the prime surface to paint. Consider adding a splash of colour in your room with painted cabinets.
