Planning An Extension: Tips & Advice

It goes without saying that a kitchen extension will transform a space and add value to your property. From sliding doors and sensational sky lights through to side returns, the opportunities are endless.

This can seem like a long and disruptive process, however, with the right guidance and planning, a kitchen extension could be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. We’ve enlisted the help of our Head of Design, Melissa Klink, to share her advice on how to manage a project like this.

It’ll come as no surprise to learn that proper planning is the secret to success. Here are some pointers to start you off on the right footing:

· Clarity of roles helps avoid confusion. Ensure each party understands their role in the project and the time frame that their work is expected to be carried out in.

· Be realistic. Always allow extra time, that way you should hopefully not be disappointed if any unforeseen issues arise.

· Know when to ask for help. Consider appointing a project manager, who can offer experience, attention to detail and most importantly time. They will lead the project for you and keep track of deadlines – it’s a full-time job managing kitchen design plans, installation, architect drawings and building work.

Top tips for finishing touches:
When planning an extension, people often underestimate the importance of lighting and its impact on the natural flow of the room. This is an area where you will benefit from the advice of a professional, as they’ll be able to devise a scheme that works with your daily routines and lifestyle.

Incorporate similar textures throughout the extension. Why not try raw wooden panels on the kitchen wall and a side board in a comparable material? This will add interest and ensure design continuity.

Finally, and this will sound obvious, make sure you allow enough space for “living”. A smart way to do this is to soften the transition between living and working spaces; if you want to create defined spaces, try changing the wall colour or flooring to “zone” your different areas.

Your expert designer will be pleased to offer advice about how best to incorporate this new space into your kitchen design. Call 0800 389 6938 to speak with a designer in your local showroom, or request a complimentary design consultation here.
