The bold, dark colours that are so on trend right now – think darkly delicious navy, deep emerald green and rich mustard – lend themselves beautifully to another key look for this autumn, opulence. Highly decorative linear patterns and lacquer-like finishes bring to mind Japanese decorative designs and the high street has been quick to respond.
The animal kingdom is well represented this autumn with this Japanese trend, with designs featuring beautiful flying cranes from Tesco’s Fox & Ivy range, including sumptuous dark navy embroidered cushions as well as a range of dinnerware pieces. Meanwhile, cats and coy carp abound at George at Asda, featuring on gold ornaments as well as kitsch cat cushions, plus Geisha and blossom-pattern bed linen too.
Rex London (formerly dotcomgiftshop.com) has always favoured simple linear Japanese style decoration, particularly on their china and this season they have more designs and pieces than ever before. A particular favourite is the simple but effective large graphic dash bowl in blue with an elegant yellow rim, perfect for holding a sharing portion of noodle soup.
There are plenty of ways to create a taste of Japan in a multi-functional kitchen space, with feature wallpapers from companies such as Mind the Gap, whose elegant Japanese Garden wallpaper is reminiscent of the paper screens so abundant in Japanese homes, while its Tsuru indigo wallpaper is an opulent finish for a dining room wall.
Finally, the British Museum shop features a number of products featuring that quintessentially Japanese woodblock print by artist Katsushika Hokusai, Under the Wave, off Kanagawa (The Great Wave), including mounted prints, cushions, tea towels and mugs.
