This 1850s period home in Surrey had only ever had three long-term owners. Each left their mark on it.
When the current owners came to us, they had a clear vision: to transform the kitchen-dining area into a modern open plan family space that felt entirely their own. Clean-lined, considered and designed around contemporary family life.
The Arbor cabinetry is handpainted in Abyss by Harvey Jones, a deep blue-green that sits beautifully against Aurora Pure White Quartz worktops and the greenery beyond. It’s a bespoke kitchen that balances striking design with everyday practicality.
Discover real, bespoke kitchen & home inspiration.
The Arbor collection has clean, frameless lines that give it a distinctly modern feel. Paired with Abyss, the result is bold without feeling heavy. The deep blue-green cabinetry draws inspiration from the surrounding garden, while white quartz worktops bring brightness and balance throughout the space.
Large bifold doors flood the room with natural light, allowing the darker cabinetry colour to feel open and welcoming. Beyond the doors, the patio uses the same flooring as the interior, creating a seamless connection between indoors and out and making the room feel even larger.
The clients wanted a calm, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. Black hardware, rattan stools and reeded glass details introduce texture without competing with the cabinetry.
At the centre of the room sits a large island that acts as both a practical workspace and a social hub. It separates the cooking area from the living space without creating a physical barrier, helping the room feel connected while still giving each zone a clear purpose.
The range cooker with induction hob anchors the main cooking area, while a hidden extractor keeps sightlines clean. Integrated fridge housing sits flush with the cabinetry, allowing the eye to travel uninterrupted across the room.
This layout supports modern family life. Children can sit at the island while homework is completed, guests can gather nearby while meals are prepared, and conversations can continue across the space. Every element has been designed to encourage easy movement and interaction.
Smart storage keeps the kitchen practical and clutter-free for everyday family life.
A walk-in pantry storage cupboard with a reeded glass door provides dedicated space for dry goods and everyday essentials, keeping them close at hand but hidden from view.
The countertop dresser offers storage for crockery and frequently used items, while serving as an appliance garage allowing kettles, toasters and coffee machines to be tucked away when not in use.
Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry maximises storage without disrupting the clean aesthetic. Every cabinet has been planned around how the family uses the space, ensuring functionality is built into every detail.
In a bespoke handmade kitchen, storage should be as carefully considered as the design itself.
Yes, and this project demonstrates why dark green continues to be such a popular choice.
One concern homeowners often have is whether darker cabinetry will make a room feel smaller. Here, several design decisions prevent that from happening. Aurora Pure White Quartz worktops reflect natural light throughout the space, while large bifold doors create an entire wall of glazing. Pale flooring also helps maintain a light and airy feel.
Abyss shifts throughout the day, appearing cooler in morning light and richer in the evening. This gives the colour depth and character, helping it feel dynamic rather than static. The result is a luxury kitchen that feels sophisticated and welcoming in equal measure.
White quartz, like this Aurora Pure White Quartz, is one of the most effective pairings for deep green kitchen cabinetry. The contrast keeps the space feeling bright and open while allowing the colour of the cabinetry to take centre stage.
Quartz is also a practical choice for busy family homes. It’s durable, easy to maintain and highly resistant to everyday wear, making it particularly well suited to hardworking kitchen islands and preparation areas.
The most successful open plan spaces use furniture and layout rather than walls to create definition.
In this kitchen, the island acts as the key zoning feature. It provides a place for informal dining, food preparation and socialising, while naturally marking the transition between the kitchen and living areas.
Lighting, seating and furniture choices further reinforce the distinction between zones. At the same time, continuous flooring throughout the room maintains a sense of flow, ensuring the space feels cohesive rather than divided.
The Arbor range is designed for homeowners who want clean lines, classic proportions and a kitchen that feels timeless yet modern.
In this project, Arbor cabinetry creates a cohesive and understated feel across the space. This consistency is one of the defining characteristics of a bespoke kitchen, where every element is designed to work together.
