However small or large your space, adding an area for seating will give your kitchen an extra dimension, allowing even the most compact of rooms to become the dream design you’ve always wanted. While there are options to suit every home, here are five flexible seating solutions we love:

BENCH SEATING
The bold inky shade of this bench seating arrangement – Stiffkey Blue from Farrow & Ball in case you were wondering – mirrors the island it sits beside and the cabinetry beyond. Placed just to one side of the working area of this Shaker kitchen, it allows for speedy table laying and serving of meals, be it a relaxed weekend breakfast or a slightly more formal dinner with friends. Of course, when it’s not used for dining, it’s a great place for the kids to sit doing their homework or just playing while the cook gets on with supper.

CALLED TO THE BAR
Think your space is too small to accommodate a seating area? Well, you might be wrong. It’s amazing the difference adding a peninsula with a small overhang can make. Thinking outside the box allows this Linear design to go beyond the confines of the relatively small kitchen area, creating a peninsula with a protruding worktop to act as a compact breakfast bar just right for two.

GO LOW
If you want an informal eating area but are concerned about small children climbing up and down from high bar stools, then this low table, adjoined to a central workstation is an ingenious solution. It provides just as much space for people to sit but keeps them away from the working areas of the kitchen. Great if you have a hob or hot water tap on the island you’d like to keep little fingers away from.

MIX IT UP
In larger rooms and open-plan kitchen diners, incorporating a number of different levels and using a variety of materials to define zones is a great solution. The perfect place for guests to perch, this simple walnut peninsula contrasts beautifully with the pale blue of the island to which it is attached, straddling the border between the kitchen and the rest of the open-plan room.
