The Community Larder

11th June 2020

Utilising larders within our network of 32 showrooms nationwide, we are is issuing a call for food and household donations, which will be redistributed back to the community in partnership with the Trussell Trust, a charity that provides emergency food to a nationwide network of food banks. For every item donated, we will match it with a 50p cash donation towards the Trussell Trust.

We initially devised the campaign in response to evidence of stockpiling in the wake of Covid-19, which has seen grocery sales in the UK increase by over 22%** (from the week of 14 March), compared with the same period in 2019. Since then, it has been predicted that more than three million people in Britain will go hungry as a result of the coronavirus crisis; this is according to new research conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Food Foundation. The campaign is designed to redirect excess goods to those who need it.

Speaking on behalf of Harvey Jones, our CEO John Curwen, has said: “We have seen many heart-warming examples of people showing support within the community, whether that be collecting shopping for elderly neighbours or simply opening their doors and windows every Thursday evening to join the national applause. The Community Larder is our contribution to this great national effort and hopefully endorses the sentiment that we’re all in this together”.

The campaign will launch with the reopening of our showrooms, which is happening nationwide in preparation for Monday 15 June, in line with government guidelines. To ensure safe social distancing, a collection box will be located outside each showroom and carefully managed by our friendly showroom managers.
