The addition of block colour can act as a way of zoning an open plan kitchen scheme, clearly separating areas into groups yet retaining a streamlined appearance. Part of the charm of an open plan room is the feeling of light and space throughout, so instead of creating physical barriers define the various areas by selecting differing primary colours. Bold shades such as the pink and soft grey contrasted with the blue in the kitchen on the left, complement each other whilst helping to determine between the kitchen and living space. A brightly painted single coloured wall can also give prominence to reflective kitchen hardware and finishes which, when combined with painted furniture, will breathe life into formerly staid kitchens.

The kitchen is the perfect environment for experimenting with colour on both a large or small scale. When deciding on your shade of paint, make sure you consider your space first – kitchens with lots of light can take a bolder, darker colour than a more enclosed room where bright white cabinets will help create the illusion of a bigger space. By adding a coloured glass splashback or painting cabinetry in a vibrant shade you can change the whole look of the kitchen space and create a bright and contemporary scheme.
