A quick glance at the SS18 shows at the tail end of last year confirmed top billing for a trend that’s been slowly gathering pace for a few years now – Global.
What started out as a few cushions and throws with ikat prints or desert tones of mustard yellows and terracotta has morphed into a look that takes inspirations from all over the world – including pieces inspired by places as far afield as Indonesia, Africa and the American mid-west. Think bold jungle flora and fauna prints, monochrome tribal geometrics, exotic animal-inspired decorative features and hand-crafted natural materials.
It’s a look that really has something for every room and everyone. Of course, with so many colours, styles and inspirations in one trend how can you create a consistent global aesthetic in your home? The key is to pick one element or colour palette and follow it through. A single neutral shade as a base, particularly in a kitchen or kitchen diner will allow you to go all-out with your chosen scheme.
If you’re adventurous with interiors, try blues paired with pinks and golds then opt for products that channel East Asia cultures. Using delicate patterns featuring May blossoms or exotic bird motifs, rich navys paired with pinks of every shade from pale blush to vibrant coral, this side of the global trend is grown up and elegant.
Want to go bold with your prints and textures? Then max out with jungle-inspired greenery theme that pairs bold palm wallpaper with maximalist gold lighting featuring exotic animals, and furnishings in luxurious emerald velvets. Finally, for an earthier, more hand-crafted feel, take a trip to the Americas for accessories in fiesta reds, yellows and teracottas and featuring this seasons other must-have trend, tassels and fringing. Add a few desert-style elements including faux cacti in rustic pots and geometric patterned cushions and throws to complete the look.
