Designing a bespoke kitchen is a carefully considered journey that balances practical layouts and storage with aesthetic detail. From the first conversation with a client to the final refinement of a layout, every stage of the kitchen design process plays an important role in shaping a space that works beautifully over time.

In a luxury kitchen showroom, this process begins long before cabinetry is installed. So, to understand what really happens behind the scenes, we spoke with Harvey Jones kitchen designer Josh, from our Guildford kitchen showroom. He spoke to us about how thoughtful design evolves into a truly bespoke kitchen.

Starting the Day in a Luxury Kitchen Showroom

Before clients arrive, designers, like Josh, review ongoing projects, revisit layout drawings and check the finer details of designs already in progress. Each project is unique, and the early part of the day often involves refining ideas developed during previous consultations.

“I’ll start the day by opening up, turning on the coffee machine and doing my usual morning admin. Then I’ll sit with new clients and onboard clients who are beginning their kitchen design process with us.”

Working within a luxury kitchen showroom environment allows designers to showcase real cabinetry, materials and appliances to clients during a design consultation.

Understanding How Clients Live

The most important stage in designing a bespoke kitchen is understanding how it will be used. Early conversations with clients focus less on cabinetry styles and more on daily routines. Cooking habits, entertaining, storage needs and family life all influence the direction of the design.

“I’ll ask my clients what they currently have in their kitchen that does or doesn’t work. Do you entertain? Do you host events? Do you love to cook, and how does this look? Getting a full picture of their lifestyle is key before we begin designing anything.”

This early part of the design process is about listening carefully. A thoughtful kitchen designer will explore how a space needs to function throughout the day. The final design should feel natural to live with rather than simply visually impressive.

The First Steps in Designing a Kitchen Layout

Once a designer understands how a space will be used, attention turns to layout. In a bespoke kitchen, every cabinet and drawer can be tailored to the room and the client’s needs. This is key to allow storage solutions and workflows to be planned with precision.

“A lot of clients spend a lot of time moodboarding on Pinterest – the great thing about us is that we’re fully bespoke. Meaning if a client has a highly specific vision, we can aim to replicate their favourite features and bring it to life with high quality renders.”

Designers often begin by reviewing architectural drawings or room dimensions, mapping out the most effective placement for cabinetry, appliances and preparation areas. At this stage, balance is essential. The layout must feel intuitive while still allowing the bespoke kitchen to become a visually calm and elegant part of the home.

“Having the showroom is a really valuable resource for clients. Here, they can fully immerse themselves in designs, storage ideas, layouts, materials and really start to envision their dream design come to life.”

Refining Materials and Details in a Bespoke Kitchen

With the layout established, the design moves into a more tactile stage. Clients are invited to explore painted finishes, worktop materials and cabinetry details within the kitchen showroom. Seeing displays in person is helpful to visualise how their luxury kitchen will feel.

“The biggest design detail that influences daily life, other than layout and storage, is the worktop. Investing in durability and something you’ll love for a long time is so important. The worktop can change the entire look of a space, so it’s key to experience options in person during the kitchen design process.”

Kitchen designers guide clients through different combinations, ensuring colours, textures and materials work harmoniously throughout the room.

Visualising the Finished Design

As the design evolves, drawings and visual plans help bring ideas together. Detailed layouts, elevations and design visuals allow clients to see how cabinetry will interact with architectural features such as windows, doorways and natural light.

“We bring client designs to life with high quality renders and photograph mockups capturing different angles and features – it means they can truly envision their kitchen and finalise any details.”

This stage of the kitchen design process helps translate ideas discussed in the showroom into a clear design direction. Adjustments are made gradually, ensuring every element feels balanced before the kitchen moves towards production.

Why Visiting a Kitchen Showroom Matters

While inspiration often begins online, experiencing a luxury kitchen showroom in person offers something entirely different.

“I always encourage clients to visit our showroom in person to experience the quality. You can see a lot of kitchens in brochures and online but it’s not the same as feeling materials in person. As a fully bespoke kitchen company, our quality needs to be experienced to truly appreciate the final result.”

Clients can explore cabinetry details up close, see how colours interact with natural light and experience the craftsmanship that defines a Harvey Jones kitchen.

Equally important is the opportunity to speak directly with a kitchen designer. Conversations in the showroom often spark new ideas, helping clients refine their vision while gaining confidence in the kitchen design process.
